Beware of Dog

Scully, the Wonder Border Collie, and Dodger – big supporters of the culinary arts.

Scully and Dodger

Lydia Riehl emailed in this great shot of her 2 pals moments after their little snack. The pictured flour sack towel had been used to wrap her loaves to take to work. She put the towel on the kitchen counter after returning home and moments later heard a suspicious tearing sound.

As Lydia put it… “Pix attached of Scully’s enthusiastic enjoyment of the crumbly towel as well as Dodgers fairly accurate expression of what he thinks on the matter of ‘Devil Dog’.”

Good stuff!

I used to make a German Christmas Loaf filled with candied fruit and nuts to give to my friends every year. One time I gave a friend one and we also were going to share in having it for dessert. While we were in the living room, their Afgan dog was in the kitchen eyeing the sweet bread. He started to eat the top part of the loaf. Since there was so much work involved in the making of this dessert, my host and I decided to just put some more icing on top to hide the damage. Decided not to tell anyone in the rest of the party. They enjoyed it thoroughly. To this day I have never told my husband; it occurred almost 35 years ago. But I will never forget it.

I have a dachshund. No trouble with removing bread from the counter or table. If she could she would. She runs in everytime I am eating my baked bread and loves every morsel.

O dear. I have two (otherwise very well behaved) pitbulls who have developed a taste for sourdough starter. What a horrible mess. They’ve ended up licking it out of eachothers ears on at least one occasion. I think it’s funny that they seem drawn to the starter so much more than the bread.

Hello all,
I have a 6 year old lab who loves bread. When I started making sourdough bread he would be watching behind the babyguard. Once the bread was baked he would show me where it was sitting each and everytime I walked into the kitchen. We did loose one loaf due to it being to close to the edge of the counter.

my border collie mix is also a big fan of sourdough. the first time I discovered this, I came home to find her covered with starter and the container, which had been tipped over, completely empty. the farts and burps continued for days! after that I was careful to keep the starter out of her reach but this morning, while I was in the shower, she enjoyed a loaf I baked last night. Keva looks like the black dog in the above picture-too funny

Been there with Yorkies who got into everything – even ate a whole raw chicken once ….. bet the bread tasted better. You’ve gotta love them!

I’ve discovered the perfect way to use experimental breads that don’t pass muster. Cut them into bits, dry them out, and they make perfect dog biscuits! The busted loaf of whole wheat and honey, that had too much honey, was a particularly yummy doggie treat to them.
I just make sure not to wrap the bread in the towels any more!!

Too funny! Scully looks like he wants to find some more and Dodger is VERY sorry that Scully got into trouble. Dodger says he can’t get him to stop because the bread is SO GOOD!!!

Oh yes, been there, done that. Max the wonder dog, who resides in our house, has taken apart 4 potholders in the last two months. And that is just the latest in a long list of things that he has managed to get off the counter.
