Fast Waterproof Thin Probe Thermometer - Side Display
This model features a very thin probe leaving no noticeable hole in your bread.
Chris Kimball of Cook's Illustrated Magazine selected this thermometer as one of his two favorite low cost thermometers.
Where most "instant" read thermometers take 20-30 seconds to reach a true temperature reading, this one takes about 6-8 seconds.
When you're checking to see if your bread is done, waiting 20-30 seconds for your "instant" read thermometer to reach a true reading seems like an eternity. To minimize heat loss from oven and food, you want an accurate reading quickly.

Instant read probe thermometers are considered by many professional bread bakers to be (along with the kitchen scale) an essential tool. They take the guesswork out of determining when your bread or other food is done cooking.

Pros: Solid, well made, great price. Easy to read. Goes on automatically when inserted in bread. Auto shut off when not in use.
Cons: This model is LARGE for an instant read thermometer and the probe is thick, making a relatively large hole in your bread. These are not problems for most people or breads that have more of an open crumb (larger holes).

Pros: Very thin probe. Takes up little space. Waterproof.
Cons: No auto shut off.

Very similar to $22.00 model except this one has the auto shut off feature and is the only one of the three models that can be calibrated. We don't think calibration is important for bread baking since all of these models will be accurate enough anyway, but if you're also using it for cheese and/or candy making, you might want to be able to calibrate it to insure utmost accuracy.
